Support for a young women with complex needs

The aim of the job is to provide support and assistance to a young woman with complex health and care needs, physical, postural, and visual difficulties. The young woman is a permanent wheelchair user and has epilepsy.
The young woman lives in the family home with her parents, is very sociable and has good communication skills. She enjoys and participates in weekly work leisure, social and learning activities. These activities provide support, offering opportunities to be involved in the wider world, enabling her to maintain a positive attitude to life and her emotional, physical, and mental wellbeing. The young woman is determined to fulfil her ambitions and to engage in any opportunities available, which will enrich and fulfil her life.
A Personal Assistant is employed to support and enable her to live her life the way she chooses whilst at the same time giving her guidance and support to make safe decisions.
Getting the right assistance when she needs it will allow her to lead her life more confidently and independently. A Personal Assistant will enable her to do this by listening to the guidance from the young woman, her parents and her senior PA, along with spending time getting to know her.
After a period of familiarisation within the role, you will be required to assist with tasks, without close supervision. The post holder will, therefore, need to have experience of supporting individuals with complex care needs or have worked in a similar role. You will be able to work on your own initiative, whilst remaining respectful of the employer’s wishes and ensuring that her physical and emotional needs are met.
You will become part of a small established team, with a Senior Personal Assistant, providing 2:1 support for all moving and handling tasks. A minimum level of one to one support is required throughout the day. 2:1 overnight support is also required for holidays and short breaks.
As a Personal Assistant, you will provide support and assistance with the following tasks to enable the employer to be safely involved and as independent as possible.
Personal Care, Stoma care, Administering medication, Preparing and cooking food and support with eating and drinking, Domestic tasks around the home and laundry, Budgeting and money skills, Support with shopping, Social support, Support and assistance in the Hydrotherapy pool (2:1 support/weekly session), Support to use technology
The Right Person
The young woman is looking for an experienced Female Personal Assistant who is friendly and approachable with a good sense of humour and a can-do, encouraging attitude. They must be reliable, trustworthy, and punctual.
Due to the complex health and care needs involved, it is vital that you have good communication and listening skills.
Moving and handling experience is preferred, although training will be provided. You do not have to be strong to do the job well, but general good health is very important.
As there is the use of a Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle, a driver is required.
As a Personal Assistant is required to work one-to-one, it is important that the employer and employee maintain an open and honest relationship and that the PA is aware of and sensitive to their needs. A positive attitude and the ability to remain calm in stressful situations are essential.
This role is for 37 hours per week (Part-time applicants will be considered) Part-time – 21hrs + 16hrs
Days and times are flexible and to be arranged with the employer
Some weekend, evenings and overnight support are required.
The Rate of Pay
The rate of pay is £9.30 per hour and £40 per sleepover (11 pm – 7 am)
